A Spark In My Head After The Presentation To Japanese High-Schoolers…

Last Saturday, before starting my presentation on Naval Architecture for Japanese High-Schoolers, I gave them pieces of paper and told them to create something which would bring bring me that paper within 60 seconds; where I would be standing far from them. I let them create, giving them options to use tape, stapler and glue. They created paper planes, paper crane and some would just roll up the paper or simple just folded up. After 60 secs I told them to throw them to me and they did. Only a few made their way to me. From this I explained them about creativity, appearance, time constraint, material limitations, resistance, efficiency, main purpose and aim of creating which I would then relate to aspects of Naval Architecture.

From this I explained them about creativity, appearance, time constraint, material limitations, resistance, efficiency, main purpose and aim of creating which I would then relate to aspects of Naval Architecture.

What amazes me is although most of them created paper planes, as you can see in the picture, the way on how they create is totally different. This is the society we are living in. Everyone is different and everyone is working for the best, the efficiency on how they work or live with their lives might not be the optimum but you should not say that they are wrong. They might have something better than you in some places. Like here, some paper planes or paper crane may look really nice but might not travel far. The rolled up paper balls look ugly but does the job. This is reality. We are different but every one is correct in their own perspectives.
